Florence in Taxi
In Florence and in Italy in general, you can't catch a taxi on the street by raising your hand like in New York or London. Taxis must be called by phone or taken at one of the many taxi stands located throughout the city.

Example of some basic charges and fares within the city boundaries:
- Preliminary fixed charge: € 3.20

In addition to the above charges there is also the fare clocked up on the meter and other possible charges.
If you are a woman out in the city center and have to get back to your hotel or apartment alone at night, take a taxi! Be safe and get a 10% discount off the fare if you travel alone between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. – most taxi drivers won’t give the discount automatically, so don’t be afraid to ask for it!
Calling a Taxi:
Calling for a taxi in Florence is probably one of the easiest and most secure ways to ensure that you will get to where you need to go. When calling one of the several taxi companies here in Florence the operator will give you a taxi name which is made up of a name of a city and a number (ex: Roma 25). This name will help you to identify the taxi that you called.
Here is an example conversation:
Operator: Radio Taxi buona sera. (Radio Taxi good evening)
You: Vorrei un taxi in Via/Piazza (insert your street name or location) (I would like a taxi at…)
Operator: Arriva il Taxi Roma 25 in 4 minuti (Your taxi is Roma 25 and will arrive in 4 minutes)
*every taxi in Florence is a name of a city followed by a number
